Making AI systems fair for everyone

Astrae today published its AI Ethics Policy, a public standard for how artificial intelligence should be built, deployed, and held accountable when...

The policy rests on a single principle: everyone deserves fair opportunities, no matter their ethnic background, sexual orientation, or any other personal factor.

These standards apply to anyone who builds, deploys, or relies on AI to make decisions about people, whether they are companies, institutions, or governments. AI is becoming one of the most powerful tools for making decisions about people, determining who gets approved, who gets flagged, who gets watched, who gets helped, and who gets left behind.

Used well, it can make those decisions faster and fairer, but used carelessly, or deliberately, it can take old prejudices, present them as objective math, and apply them to millions of people at once, quietly, at scale, and behind a false appearance of neutrality. The danger is greatest when AI becomes a tool of discrimination in the hands of those with power over people's lives, because when an automated system decides who is surveilled, who receives benefits, who is investigated, or who is turned away, a wrong answer is not a glitch, it is a person who was harmed.

Astrae believes AI should be used to expand opportunity, not to narrow it. That means making fair decisions more consistent and removing human bias rather than encoding it, helping people reach the services, housing, credit, and opportunities they are entitled to, and detecting fraud, abuse, and real harm while protecting the innocent from false accusation.

It also means reducing repetitive work so people can focus on judgment, care, and the cases that need a human, and making information clearer and decisions easier to understand for the people they affect. AI must never be used to profile, score, surveil, or disadvantage people based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, age, or any other protected or personal characteristic.

It must never be used to conduct mass surveillance, or to build social scoring systems that rank human beings by their perceived worth. It must never make consequential decisions about a person with no human accountability and no way to appeal, and it must never operate in secret, where the people affected do not know a machine is deciding their outcome.

It must never repurpose personal data for tracking, profiling, or sale beyond the use it was collected for. Anyone subject to an AI-assisted decision has the right to know, in plain language, when AI plays a role in a decision that affects them, and what it does and does not decide. They have the right to understand, receiving a clear explanation of how the decision was reached, and the right to be heard, reaching a human, asking why, and contesting a result they believe is wrong.

They also have the right to be protected, having their personal data collected only when necessary, secured carefully, and never used against them in ways they did not agree to. Anyone who builds or deploys AI is responsible for its outcomes, including the ones they did not intend. AI systems should be tested for biased and unequal results before and after they go into use, and disparate impact should be treated as a defect to be fixed, not a cost of doing business.

This is a living standard, meant to be strengthened as the technology and society's understanding of it continue to grow. Astrae holds itself, its products, and its partners to this standard.
